![]() ![]() Note that the cartridge designation is VM95… but the replacement stylus designation is VMN95…. So for example if your turntable comes with a low end VM95C cartridge with conical stylus, the stylus part itself can be upgraded with the VMN95E, VMN95EN, VMN95ML and VMN95SH or even the VMN95SP for 78’s. Some cartridges use the same cartridge body with a range of different styluses, which is cheaper than changing the whole cartridge. A worn stylus can therefore be replaced without having to go through realignment of the cartridge and rebalancing the arm. MM cartridges usually have replaceable stylus units that easily clip out of the cartridge by pulling gently down on the stylus unit (NOT the needle itself). It depends on the specific tonearm and cartridge. The high MSRP should probably have been $599 or $549 to start with. Music Hall Classic $599 $479 display model.Music Hall are made in the same factory as Pro-ject and a good value when on sale: Pro-Ject Debut Carbon EVO is better than the Essential III. Pro-Ject Essential III is better than the T1. Rega can have a bit better component and build quality than a Pro-ject of a similar price bracket depending on which turntables you are comparing.ĭo not buy the Pro-Ject T1, it has a higher wow and flutter than the $99 LP60X, which is not acceptable on a $200+ turntable. The Planar 2 only includes a $30 conical tip stylus cartridge so upgrade it sooner than later. If you get the Planar 2 make sure to get the new updated version with adjustable bias (as of Autumn 2020) on the RB220 tonearm. So what are the real differences that matter between the Rega Planar 2 vs Pro-Ject Debut Carbon Evo vs Pro-Ject Essential III vs Pro-Ject T1 (and all those sub-lines)? I'd rather not spend more than $500, but I also want to get the best value for my money and will splurge if it's really worth it for a better listening experience. I know that the Planar 2 is better than all the Pro-Ject models I listed, but I don't know specifically in what ways it's better that makes it cost several hundred dollars more. I've done weeks of research and know only that I want to get either the Rega Planar 2 or a Pro-Ject belt-driven model. ![]() I'm still a total novice as an audiophile so while I understand generally that certain aspects from the motor to the platter to the arm to the cartridge matter I'm kinda dumb and naive to all the different components and brands. Now I just need the turntable to fill it out. I'll be running through a Denon AVR-S650H receiver and ELAC Debut 2.0 b6.2 bookshelf speakers. I'm trying to turn my vinyl collection hobby into a genuine audiophile hobby and I'm putting together an in-home audio system from scratch. ![]()
